Lumber Weight Calculator: How Much Does Lumber Weigh?

Calculate the weight of dimensional lumber, treated lumber, LVL and sheet goods by species, size, length and quantity. Use it to size a delivery, plan a crane or forklift pick, check a floor or scaffold load, or estimate freight on a framing package.

Weight = actual volume (ft³) × species density (lb/ft³). Built by professional lumber estimators. Weight charts and FAQs.

How lumber weight is calculated

Weight is the actual volume of the piece times the density of the species. A 2×4 is really 1-1/2″ × 3-1/2″, so an 8-foot 2×4 is 1.5 × 3.5 × 96 ÷ 1728 = 0.292 cubic feet. Kiln-dried SPF runs about 29 lb per cubic foot, so the stud weighs about 8.5 lb. The same stud in Douglas fir is about 10 lb, in Southern yellow pine about 11 lb, and freshly pressure-treated SYP, which is saturated with treatment solution, about 14 lb. Moisture is the biggest variable: green lumber straight from the mill can weigh 50% more than kiln-dried, and treated lumber loses weight for weeks as it dries on site.

The densities in the calculator are typical values at 15–19% moisture content, which is what “KD” or “S-DRY” framing lumber is stamped at. They are good for delivery, freight and lifting estimates. For structural dead-load calculations use the values in your engineer’s specs or the NDS.

Multiply by 1.25 for 10′ lengths, 1.5 for 12′, 2.0 for 16′. Engineered lumber: a 1-3/4″ × 11-7/8″ LVL weighs about 6 lb per foot; a 3-1/2″ × 11-7/8″ PSL about 13 lb per foot.

Why the weight matters

A framing package for a 2,000 sq ft house is around 14,000–16,000 board feet of dimensional lumber plus 250–300 sheets of sheathing, which comes to roughly 35,000–45,000 lb, or three boom-truck loads. On a mid-rise wood-frame project the numbers get serious: the 118,793 sq ft hotel our estimators took off in Sacramento carried about 60,000 pieces of dimensional lumber and 11,236 sheets, well over 400 tons of wood, delivered floor by floor. Knowing the weight per pick lets the crane operator, the forklift crew and the engineer checking the slab or the deck all work from the same number. Use the board foot calculator for volume and pricing, and the framing calculator to build the piece list in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 2×4 weigh?

An 8-foot kiln-dried SPF 2×4 weighs about 8.5 lb; Douglas fir about 10 lb; Southern yellow pine about 11 lb. A freshly treated 2x4x8 is 13–14 lb. A 2x4x10 is 25% more and a 2x4x16 is double.

How much does a 2×6 weigh?

An 8-foot 2×6 weighs 13–17 lb depending on species (SPF at the low end, SYP at the high end). A treated 2x6x16 for a deck or sill plate is about 44 lb when fresh.

How much does a sheet of OSB weigh?

7/16″ OSB is about 46 lb per 4×8 sheet, 15/32″ about 50 lb, and 23/32″ tongue-and-groove subfloor about 78 lb. A 50-sheet unit of 7/16″ is roughly 2,300 lb.

How much does pressure-treated lumber weigh?

About 30–40% more than the same size untreated when it is fresh from the treatment plant, because it is saturated with water-based preservative. It dries to close to untreated weight over several weeks. Plan lifts and deliveries on the wet weight.

How much does a bundle of 2x4s weigh?

A standard unit of 2x4x8 SPF is 294 pieces (or 208 in some mills). At 8.5 lb each, 294 studs is about 2,500 lb. Douglas fir units run about 2,900 lb. Always check the unit count on the tag, because it varies by mill and length.

How much does a house framing package weigh?

Roughly 18–22 lb per square foot of floor area for the lumber and sheathing together, so 35,000–45,000 lb for a 2,000 sq ft house. That is typically three boom-truck deliveries. A professional takeoff gives the exact piece list so the yard can build the loads.
